Jamar Traylor, Violent Street Gang Participation, Connecticut 2024

Bridgeport’s infamous gangster ‘J-Hop,’ Jamar Traylor, has been handed a severe 168-month sentence for his role in a violent street gang. The 23-year-old from Bridgeport was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley today.

Traylor, also known as ‘J-Hop,’ has been ensnared in a federal prison term after being convicted of participating in the Original North End (O.N.E.) gang, a notorious outfit based in Bridgeport’s Trumbull Gardens area. His offenses included drug trafficking, murder attempts, and armed robberies.

According to court documents, the O.N.E. gang, of which Traylor was a member, was not only involved in local violence but also engaged in cross-state crimes, such as stealing cars to commit further acts of violence. On August 13, 2018, they mistakenly shot and killed Len Smith, 25, mistaking him for a rival gang member.

Traylor’s sentence comes after his arrest on June 1, 2021, where police discovered a cache of firearms and illegal substances at his residence while he was already on state probation. The investigation, led by the FBI, ATF, DEA, U.S. Marshals Service, and Bridgeport Police, uncovered a pattern of racketeering activity.

This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime through community partnerships and targeted enforcement. The sentence handed down today sends a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated in Connecticut.

Traylor’s conviction and sentence mark a significant victory for law enforcement agencies involved in the ongoing investigation of Bridgeport-based gangs. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Karen L. Peck, Rahul Kale, Jocelyn C. Kaoutzanis, and Tara E. Levens will be prosecuting this case.
