Bridgeport Man Charged with Child Exploitation Offenses
A Bridgeport man is facing federal charges for child exploitation offenses after a months-long investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to court documents, 62-year-old Michael Nastu, of Bridgeport, initiated a chat with an undercover FBI agent posing as a 14-year-old girl on the Kik social media application in March 2021. Over the course of several months, Nastu sent the undercover agent sexually explicit messages and images, in an attempt to entice her to send him child pornography.
The complaint charges Nastu with attempted transfer of obscene materials to a minor, which carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years; attempted receipt of child pornography, which carries a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of five years and a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years; and attempted enticement of a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity, which carries a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a maximum term of imprisonment of life.
Nastu appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Dave Vatti via videoconference and is currently being held in detention. Acting U.S. Attorney Leonard C Boyle stressed that a criminal complaint is not evidence of guilt, and that Nastu is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The matter is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nancy V. Gifford and Amanda S. Oakes. This case is a reminder of the importance of protecting our children from online predators and the serious consequences that those who engage in such behavior will face.
The charges against Nastu are a stark reminder of the dangers of online exploitation and the importance of being vigilant in protecting our children from those who would seek to harm them.
The case is a testament to the dedication and hard work of law enforcement agencies in protecting our communities from those who would seek to harm our children.
