CLEVELAND – Joel Alonte Travis, a 21-year-old Cleveland man, has been sentenced to 144 months (12 years) in prison for his role in an armed bank robbery. The U.S. District Judge Donald C. Nugent imposed the harsh sentence on Aug. 14.
Travis was found guilty by a federal jury in April of armed bank robbery and using and carrying a firearm during, and in relation to, a crime of violence. He was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release after his prison term and pay $112,440 in restitution.
The violent incident occurred on Oct. 16, 2024, when Travis and an accomplice ambushed a service technician at gunpoint while he was performing maintenance on a Chase Bank ATM in South Euclid, Ohio. The robbers demanded the tech remove cash-filled cassettes from the machine, stealing five cassettes containing approximately $112,440.
Travis, who was on probation for an unrelated crime and under electronic monitoring at the time of the robbery, was linked to the crime through location data and other information. A search warrant at his apartment uncovered three firearms, including a pistol resembling the one seen in the bank’s surveillance video. Photos of Travis holding large sums of money were also found, posted on social media.
Investigation into the case was conducted by the FBI Cleveland Division, Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office, Cleveland Heights Police Department, and South Euclid Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michelle M. Baeppler and Kristen Rolph prosecuted the case for the Northern District of Ohio.
The grim sentence sends a stark message about the consequences of armed robbery in the state of Ohio.
