Gerald M. Cook Jr, Fentanyl Trafficking, Ohio 2025

CLEVELAND – Gerald M. Cook Jr., 38, a drug kingpin in Cleveland, has been handed a 248-month (over 20-year) prison sentence for trafficking fentanyl and illegally possessing firearms.

The sentence, imposed by U.S. District Judge Pamela A. Barker on Aug. 6, 2025, comes after Cook pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including Felon in Possession of a Firearm and previous drug trafficking convictions in 2018, 2014, and 2011.

Three counts of Possession with Intent to Distribute Controlled Substances and one count of Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime were also part of the indictment. Cook was also sentenced to five years of supervised release following his imprisonment and ordered to forfeit all firearms seized by federal agents.

‘We have no tolerance for dangerous drug traffickers who make illegal profits by harming others,’ said U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer for the Northern District Ohio. ‘Together with our law enforcement partners, we will persist in our goal to end fentanyl’s grip on so many of our communities.’

Cook was first apprehended when Willoughby Police Officers observed his black Porsche Cayenne run a red light and pull into a hotel parking lot. They discovered a loaded pistol in plain view inside the car, despite Cook being prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior convictions.

In September 2020, detectives with the Suburban Police Anti-Crime Network (SPAN) identified Cook as a drug dealer known as ‘JR’ and conducted controlled purchases of fentanyl. A subsequent search warrant at Cook’s residence yielded over 100 grams of fentanyl, two handguns, ammunition, and various drug trade tools.

‘Mr. Cook’s days of distributing poison in our communities has come to an end,’ said Acting Special Agent in Charge Andrew Lawton for the DEA Detroit Division. ‘This sentence will further protect our community and should serve as a warning to anyone willing to cash-in on suffering for profit.’
