SCRANTON- In a gritty turn of events, Lance Green, 43, from Bronx, New York, was sentenced to 235 months in prison followed by three years supervised release for firearms offenses. The sentence, handed down on November 19, 2021, by Judge Robert D. Mariani, came after Green was found guilty during a four-day trial of possessing and displaying a firearm with an obliterated serial number during a neighbor dispute in Kingston, Pennsylvania, on October 5, 2017.
Green’s criminal history includes multiple felony convictions. He was serving state parole when, on August 17, 2020, he violated federal pretrial release by committing and being convicted of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. Subsequently, Green faced 7 ½ to 15 years in state prison for the offense, which Judge Mariani ordered to be served consecutively to his federal sentence and parole violation.
The ATF and Kingston Police Department investigated this case, while Assistant United States Attorney Jenny P. Roberts prosecuted it. The investigation and prosecution were part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a joint effort by the federal government, states, and local law enforcement aiming to reduce violent crime through comprehensive community-based solutions.
Project Safe Neighborhoods, an evidence-based initiative of the Department of Justice, focuses on identifying and targeting the most violent offenders in the community while partnering with local prevention and reentry programs to ensure lasting reductions in crime. PSN’s efforts have been shown to be effective in curbing violent crime rates.
United States Attorney John C. Gurganus emphasized the importance of such programs, highlighting the successful prosecution of Green as a testament to PSN’s effectiveness. The sentence handed down by Judge Mariani reflects the severity of firearm violations and the justice system’s commitment to public safety.
The gritty determination of law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in this case underscored their resolve to combat violent crime and protect the citizens of Pennsylvania.
