Grimy Times has learned that Maliek Miller, a leader of the notorious Ninedee Gang, has been convicted of racketeering and the murder of a former government witness, Shatavia Walls. A federal jury in Brooklyn delivered the guilty verdict after a four-week trial.
According to the DOJ USAO, the Ninedee Gang has been a violent criminal enterprise operating out of the Louis H. Pink Houses in East New York, Brooklyn. Miller, the gang’s leader, was charged with racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder in-aid-of racketeering, murder in-aid-of racketeering, and other crimes. When sentenced, Miller faces a mandatory term of life in prison.
The murder of Shatavia Walls was a brazen attempt to silence her for testifying against a Ninedee associate in a federal trial. Prior to her testimony, fliers had been posted around the Pink Houses stating, “Shatavia Been a Rat And She Still Ratting.” Miller coordinated the murder with other Ninedee Gang members as part of the ongoing gang rivalry with the “7” and “8” buildings in the Pink Houses.
“Today’s verdict is momentous because it holds Miller accountable for orchestrating a cowardly plot to kill a woman who bravely stood up to his Ninedee Gang,” stated United States Attorney Breon Peace. “The verdict ensures that Miller will spend the rest of his life in prison, which I hope provides some measure of solace to the family of Shatavia Walls.”
The Ninedee Gang has a long history of violence and intimidation in the Pink Houses. Members engage in ongoing gang-related violence within and outside of the complex, and have a main rivalry with the “7” and “8” buildings. They also make money by selling drugs and committing fraud, and seek to silence anyone perceived to be working with law enforcement.
The conviction of Maliek Miller is a significant blow to the Ninedee Gang and a major victory for law enforcement. The FBI, NYPD, and USAO NY worked together to investigate and prosecute the case. “Today’s guilty verdict is another step toward eradicating gang violence in New York City,” stated NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban. “The NYPD will continue to partner with the FBI and everyone at the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District to present solid cases for prosecution and deliver justice for victims, their families, and our communities.”
