Brownsville Man Locks Up for $200K Coke Stash
Elias Garcia, a 35-year-old Brownsville resident, has been sentenced to 82 months in federal prison for trying to transport over $200,000 worth of cocaine, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
Garcia pleaded guilty on November 30, 2023, to possession with intent to distribute more than four kilograms of cocaine. This marked the end of a federal investigation led by the U.S. Border Patrol and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
On October 4, 2023, Garcia attempted to drive a Jeep Cherokee SUV through the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint. However, an X-ray scan of the vehicle revealed an anomaly in the battery compartment, prompting authorities to search the vehicle.
Inside the battery compartment, authorities discovered four bundles of cocaine weighing over four kilograms, with an estimated street value of more than $200,000. Garcia’s attempt to traffic the massive cocaine stash was successfully foiled by the joint efforts of the U.S. Border Patrol and the DEA.
U.S. District Judge David S. Morales issued the 82-month prison sentence, which will be immediately followed by four years of supervised release. Garcia will remain in custody until he is transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, to be determined in the near future.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Marck prosecuted the case, bringing Garcia to justice for his role in the cocaine trafficking operation. As Garcia begins his lengthy prison sentence, the community can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that one more trafficker has been taken off the streets.
The Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint has proven to be a crucial location in disrupting the flow of illicit narcotics into the country. This success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the law enforcement agencies involved.
