Convicted Child Predator Sentenced to 17 Years Behind Bars
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Bryan Lee Courtney, a 24-year-old resident of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, has been sentenced to 17 years in federal prison without parole for his role in the sexual exploitation of a minor.
According to court documents, Courtney used his cell phone to create a video recording of himself engaging in sex with a 15-year-old victim. The exploitation, which occurred on February 7, 2014, was part of a larger pattern of abuse that included Courtney using physical and psychological intimidation to isolate the victim from her family and friends.
On January 8, 2013, police executed a search warrant at Courtney’s residence, seizing several cell phones, iPods, and other digital media. Investigators found two videos on one of the cell phones depicting Courtney and the minor victim engaging in sex, as well as several nude or partially nude photographs of the victim.
Courtney admitted to displaying the videos and pictures to his friends and coworkers, as well as to the victim’s friends. He even sent an image of the naked child to her father after being charged with statutory rape in state court.
Bryan Lee Courtney, 24, of El Dorado Springs, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips to 17 years in federal prison without parole. The court also ordered Courtney to pay $1,494 in restitution to the victim for counseling.
This case was brought as part of the Department’s Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The investigation was conducted by the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crime Task Force and the FBI.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Carney. The sentence imposed by the court reflects the severity of the crime and the need to protect society from individuals who would engage in such heinous behavior.
In addition to his prison sentence, Bryan Lee Courtney will also be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.
