Buffalo Man Charged with Enticing Minor
A 37-year-old Buffalo man has been arrested and charged with enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity, attempted enticement of a minor, and transferring obscene matter to a minor. Brett Schultz, of Buffalo, NY, faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 15 years in prison and a maximum of life.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan P. Cantil, the charges stem from an online conversation between Schultz and what he believed to be a 14 or 15-year-old high school girl on March 10, 2017. However, the girl was actually an undercover law enforcement officer.
During the conversation, Schultz sent a naked picture of himself to the officer and asked for sexual pictures in return. He also made plans to meet with the officer the following day, but was arrested by special agents with Homeland Security Investigations on March 12, 2017.
“The defendant’s actions are a clear example of the dangers of online predators and the importance of protecting our children from these types of threats,” said Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr.
Schultz was ordered detained following a detention hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder. The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Kevin Kelly.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
