Buffalo Man Gets 58 Months for Heroin Conspiracy
BUFFALO, N.Y. – A 26-year-old Buffalo man has been handed a 58-month prison sentence for his role in a heroin conspiracy that netted him thousands on the streets of New York. John A. Cruz, 26, was convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin, a charge that carries significant prison time.
The investigation, spanning over a year from December 2009 to August 2010, revealed that Cruz sold quantities of heroin to other members of the conspiracy. As part of the ongoing investigation, Cruz was arrested in August 2010, alongside 22 other individuals, on narcotics trafficking charges.
At the time of his arrest, Cruz was awaiting sentencing on other federal drug distribution charges, a fact that likely weighed heavily on the minds of U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny when handing down the sentence. Skretny’s decision to impose a 58-month sentence is a testament to the severity of the crime and the need to hold those responsible accountable.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Catherine Baumgarten, who handled the case, praised the efforts of law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation. Baumgarten noted that the success of the case is a direct result of the tireless work of investigators and prosecutors who worked tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving several agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Niagara County Drug Enforcement Task Force, and the Niagara Frontier Transit Authority Police. Special Agent in Charge Brian R. Crowell of the DEA’s New York Field Division, Acting Special Agent in Charge Richard M. Frankel of the FBI’s Buffalo Field Office, and Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero of Homeland Security Investigations all played key roles in the investigation.
The case serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of heroin addiction on communities across the country. According to the DEA, heroin addiction affects millions of Americans, with devastating consequences for individuals, families, and communities. The success of this case is a testament to the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combatting the heroin epidemic and bringing those responsible to justice.
