Buffalo Man Sentenced for Cocaine Trafficking
BUFFALO, N.Y. – A Buffalo man, David Long, 32, has been sentenced to eight years in prison and four years supervised release by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara for his role in a cocaine trafficking operation.
Long was convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, a charge that was levied against him in July 2008 as part of a larger investigation that netted 30 defendants.
According to Assistant United States Attorney Mary Clare Kane, who handled the case, Long was intercepted on numerous occasions over New York State wiretaps, arranging to acquire and purchase cocaine from Wallace Peace and other defendants.
Search warrants executed during the investigation resulted in the seizure of 17 firearms, more than five kilograms of cocaine powder, and in excess of 200 grams of crack cocaine.
To date, 25 of the 30 defendants arrested in July 2008 have been convicted.
The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation on the part of Special Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration, under the direction of Brian R. Crowell, Special Agent in Charge, New York Region; Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, under the direction of Francis J. Christiano, Resident Agent in Charge; and Special Agents of the Buffalo Police Department, under the direction of Commissioner Daniel Derenda.
Long’s eight-year sentence is a significant blow to the local drug trafficking community, and serves as a reminder of the serious consequences faced by those involved in such activity.
The investigation and subsequent sentencing are a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working together to combat crime and keep our communities safe.
Beyond the severity of the sentence, the case also highlights the importance of wiretaps in disrupting and dismantling organized crime operations.
