Buffalo Woman Sentenced for Check Kiting Scheme
Carlique Deberry, a 35-year-old Buffalo resident, has been sentenced to six months in a halfway house and three years supervised release for her role in a check kiting scheme that targeted local area banks.
According to court documents, Deberry participated in a conspiracy to defraud banks by opening bank accounts and depositing large checks into the accounts. The deposited checks were written on accounts that had insufficient funds or on accounts that had been closed. Before the banks could determine that the checks were not supported by any funds, Deberry withdrew smaller amounts from the accounts.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell T. Ippolito, Jr. stated that the defendant made away with only $130 from Key Bank, but the intended loss amount was more than $20,000.
Co-conspirators Sade Heath, Sayonara Heath, Nichole Dean, and Antwan Green have all been convicted. Sade Heath and Sayonara Heath have been sentenced, while Dean and Green are awaiting sentencing.
The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation by the United States Secret Service. U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. praised the Secret Service for their tireless efforts in bringing Deberry to justice.
The check kiting scheme was a brazen attempt to defraud local area banks and exploit the banking system. Deberry’s conviction and sentencing serve as a reminder that those who engage in such schemes will be held accountable for their actions.
Deberry’s case is a stark reminder of the importance of bank security measures and the need for banks to be vigilant in detecting and preventing check kiting schemes.
The United States Secret Service will continue to work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute those who engage in such schemes.
