WASHINGTON — A Pittsburgh native has been hit with serious federal charges after being indicted on a hate crime assault, according to the Department of Justice.
Jeffrey Allen Burgess, 54, stands accused of violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act. The alleged offense took place on or around November 22, 2016, where Burgess is said to have willfully caused bodily injury to a victim due to their perceived race, color, and national origin.
The DOJ has laid out a severe penalty for Burgess if convicted, with a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, a fine totaling $250,000, or both. The case is being investigated by the FBI and the Bethel Park Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cindy K. Chung and Rachael L. Dizard, along with Civil Rights Division Trial Attorney Tona Boyd, are tasked with prosecuting this matter. It’s worth noting that an indictment is merely an accusation, and Burgess is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
