Burke County Felon Sentenced to 19+ Years for Meth Trafficking, Firearms Possession
In a harsh blow to the methamphetamine trade in North Carolina, Jessie Alan Clark, a 42-year-old convicted felon from Burke County, has been sentenced to 235 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, on charges of drug trafficking and firearms possession.
Clark’s lengthy prison sentence was meted out by Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, who announced the sentencing along with Robert J. Murphy, Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta Field Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Sheriff Banks Hinceman of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
According to court documents, law enforcement officials with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and agents with the DEA began investigating Clark in February 2022 after determining that he was engaged in the distribution of methamphetamine in the area. On February 15, 2022, a traffic stop was initiated after officials observed a truck attempting to evade detection by law enforcement. During the stop, Clark, the driver of the truck, and another individual, a passenger, were searched, and a backpack was seized containing two gallon-sized bags of methamphetamine and a loaded Taurus .38 caliber revolver with six rounds of ammunition.
The total amount of methamphetamine seized in the traffic stop was valued at $1,915 in U.S. currency, which was also seized during the stop. Clark, a convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition, further aggravating the charges against him.
On August 21, 2023, Clark pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Hess of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Asheville prosecuted the case.
U.S. Attorney King thanked the DEA and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office for their tireless efforts in investigating the case, which ultimately led to Clark’s conviction and sentencing. Clark will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending transportation to a designated U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to serve his non-paroleable sentence of incarceration.
Clark’s lengthy prison sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of engaging in methamphetamine trafficking and firearms possession, particularly for those with prior convictions. The sentence also underscores the unwavering commitment of law enforcement agencies to disrupting and dismantling methamphetamine trafficking operations in North Carolina and beyond.
