Michael G. Caldwell, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Missouri 2023

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The grimy streets of Springfield witnessed a heavy-handed justice today as Michael G. Caldwell, 37, was sentenced to a staggering 95 months in federal prison for his illegal possession of a firearm.

Caldwell’s sentence, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Stephen R. Bough, comes after he pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon on Aug. 29, 2024. The sentence includes three years of supervised release following his prison term.

The Springfield Police Department’s traffic stop on Caldwell’s Dodge Charger on April 2, 2024, turned into a high-tension confrontation when officers spotted suspicious movements and resisted arrest. When the dust settled, a Ruger pistol was found hidden between the center console and front passenger seat of the vehicle, along with $1,610 in cash.

The Ruger pistol had been linked to a shooting incident on March 21, 2024, when shell casings from the crime scene matched those found at Caldwell’s possession. His cell phone also confirmed his presence at the scene, according to cell site data.

Under federal law, it is an offense for felons like Caldwell to possess any firearm or ammunition. Caldwell has a sordid past with prior felony convictions for robbery, possession of a controlled substance, and delivery of a controlled substance.

This case was the result of a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Springfield Police Department. It is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across America’s neighborhoods.
