CANTON, OHIO — A gritty Canton man has been hit with a federal indictment for a litany of drug and firearms charges, including distribution of crack cocaine and possession of firearms by a convicted felon.
Jack D. Wise, 39, stands accused on three counts of distributing crack cocaine, one count of possession with intent to distribute at least 28 grams of the illegal substance, as well as possession of firearms by a convicted felon and in furtherance of trafficking of crack cocaine.
The charges stem from an ATF-led operation that resulted in Wise’s arrest on March 9. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Canton Police Department Narcotics Unit, and Stark County Sheriff’s Office converged to take down Wise, who had been selling crack cocaine at least three times in 2017.
According to the indictment, Wise was caught with a kilogram of crack cocaine, two firearms, and over 170 rounds of ammunition on March 9. His previous conviction for trafficking LSD in Stark County Common Pleas Court adds weight to his current charges.
The court’s sentence will be dictated by factors unique to this case, including Wise’s criminal history and role in the offense. In any event, he faces a stiff penalty that could exceed the statutory maximum, though it is unlikely to meet the highest sentences.
Assistant United States Attorney Aaron P. Howell is handling the prosecution of this case, which has been investigated by the ATF, Canton Police Department, and Stark County Sheriff’s Office. As with all indictments, Wise is innocent until proven guilty, and he is entitled to a fair trial where the government must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
