A felon with a penchant for danger has been brought to justice in Waterloo, Iowa. Carlos Danacio Traywick, a 51-year-old Waterloo resident, was sentenced to five years in federal prison for possessing a firearm and drugs.
The case against Traywick began on July 16, 2022, when deputies stopped a car he was driving in Waterloo. During the traffic stop, Traywick attempted to flee the scene, but was apprehended after a brief foot chase. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded firearm and various illicit substances, including methamphetamine, marijuana, and cocaine.
The evidence against Traywick was overwhelming, and he ultimately pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. His guilty plea was entered on February 27, 2024.
Traywick’s sentencing hearing was held in Cedar Rapids before United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand. The judge handed down a 60-month prison term, which will be followed by a four-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system, so Traywick will have to serve out his entire sentence without the possibility of early release.
The case against Traywick is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country. The program brings together law enforcement agencies and community organizations to prevent violence and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Vander Stoep, who worked closely with the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, Waterloo Police Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to bring Traywick to justice.
Traywick is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody, awaiting transportation to a federal prison to begin serving his sentence. His case is a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the importance of community-based initiatives like Project Safe Neighborhoods in preventing violent crime.
