MIAMI – A brazen case of voter fraud and gun crimes has rocked the city of Miami, with Carlos Jose Abreu, a 45-year-old illegal alien, being indicted on multiple charges.
According to court documents, Abreu, a national of the Dominican Republic, entered the United States illegally about 20 years ago and has been living in the country unlawfully since then. In 2007, the state of New Jersey issued an arrest warrant for Abreu on charges of kidnapping, sexual assault, endangering a child, and criminal restraint.
Abreu moved to Florida, assumed the identity of a real person, and used it to obtain a Florida driver’s license and apply for a passport. He has been living in the United States under the assumed identity of the American citizen victim for about 18 years.
Abreu is also accused of using the assumed identity to register to vote in September 2020 and to vote in the November 2022 federal midterm elections. It is a federal crime for an illegal alien to possess a firearm in the United States.
Abreu faces up to 15 years in federal prison if convicted on the voter fraud and gun charges. He also is subject to deportation. The case is currently being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brianna Coakley.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The case is a stark reminder of the importance of voter integrity and the consequences of breaking the law.
