LAREDO, Texas – A ruthless act of armed carjacking has landed 22-year-old Mexican national Johnathan Mata-Espinoza behind bars for over nine years. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the sentencing today, a stark reminder of the violent reach of Cartel Del Noreste.
In a harrowing incident, Mata-Espinoza approached two adults and a child at their vehicle, demanding a ride to the bus station. When they refused, he threatened them with death, pointing a gun at them. One victim handed over the keys, but all three managed to escape safely.
Law enforcement responded swiftly, locating the stolen vehicle and attempting to stop Mata-Espinoza, who fled on foot after ignoring commands. Later, authorities discovered two abandoned vehicles, one with Mata-Espinoza’s fingerprints, indicating his involvement.
After a month-long manhunt, Mata-Espinoza was finally apprehended in Laredo. The court considered the impact of his crimes on victims, noting the chilling effect cartels have on border communities. “Cases like this demonstrate the corrosive effects the cartels have on our border communities,” said U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
Mata-Espinoza will now serve 108 months in federal prison before facing removal proceedings as a non-citizen. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative to crack down on cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
