Cashiers Man Locked Up For 10+ Years For Meth and Guns

A federal judge in North Carolina has locked up a man for distributing methamphetamine and possessing firearms while on supervised release. John Allen Wise, 45, of Cashiers, N.C., was sentenced to 121 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for his crimes.

Wise’s troubles began when law enforcement with the U.S. Probation Office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office arrived at his residence to arrest him on a supervised release violation warrant and to conduct a planned search. On August 5, 2022, they found Wise sitting on his front porch with a small bag containing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

During the search of the residence, law enforcement seized fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine, digital scales and items consistent with drug distribution, a loaded semiautomatic pistol, and multiple rounds of ammunition. Wise’s criminal conviction prohibits him from possessing firearms and ammunition.

On April 24, 2023, Wise pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. U.S. Attorney Dena J. King praised the DEA and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for their investigation into the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Hess of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Asheville prosecuted the case. Wise is currently in federal custody and will be transferred to the custody of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility.

This case highlights the ongoing threat that methamphetamine and gun-related crimes pose to our communities. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to bring these offenders to justice and keep our communities safe.

U.S. Attorney King emphasized that the sentence handed down by the court reflects the severity of Wise’s crimes and the need for accountability in our communities.
