Montgomery Man Lands in Federal Prison for Illegal Glock Switch
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Twenty-one-year-old Da’Quarious Lamarion Dudley of Montgomery is facing a lengthy stint behind bars after being sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for the illegal possession of a machinegun. The conviction stems from a February incident involving a stolen vehicle and a high-speed chase with Montgomery Police.
U.S. District Court Judge Myron H. Thompson handed down the sentence this week, following Dudley’s guilty plea in March. The case, spearheaded by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona, reveals a disturbing pattern of illegal weapon modification and distribution within the Montgomery area. Dudley’s actions weren’t just about owning an illegal weapon; they pointed to a willingness to arm others with dangerous, unregulated devices.
The trouble began on February 9, 2024, when Montgomery Police received a tip about a stolen Mercedes Benz. Officers quickly located the vehicle, with Dudley at the wheel. Instead of complying, Dudley attempted a frantic U-turn, only to be blocked by responding officers. He then abandoned the stolen car and bolted on foot. During the ensuing chase, Dudley discarded a firearm – a Glock 17 9mm pistol illegally converted into a machinegun using a readily available “Glock switch.”
The recovered weapon wasn’t a one-off. Investigators digging into Dudley’s digital footprint uncovered evidence on his Facebook page showing regular possession of these “switches,” and even documented instances where he agreed to *supply* them to others in Montgomery. This suggests a potential network, a shadowy market for illegal weapon modifications operating right under the surface.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Nashville Division, working in conjunction with the Montgomery Police Department, conducted the investigation. The evidence they gathered painted a clear picture of Dudley’s criminal activity. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin A. Keown, Sr. successfully prosecuted the case, securing the 20-month sentence and sending a message that illegal weapon conversions and distribution will not be tolerated.
This case underscores the growing threat posed by Glock switches, devices that transform semi-automatic pistols into fully automatic machineguns. The ease with which these devices can be acquired and installed is fueling a dangerous trend, and law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to combat it. Dudley’s sentence is a small victory, but the fight against illegal firearms continues.
