Hammond, IN – Isaiah Castro, a 23-year-old resident of Hammond, Indiana, has been sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm during the commission of a drug trafficking crime. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Gretchen S. Lund following Castro’s guilty plea, announced Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor.
Castro, who was also on probation for resisting law enforcement at the time, distributed fentanyl-laced pills on April 16, 2024. During a subsequent search warrant, police recovered a firearm, an extended magazine, additional magazines, ammunition, and cash. According to court documents, Castro’s actions were part of a larger operation.
This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin M. Padula prosecuted the case.
The sentencing comes as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country. The program focuses on fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results to improve neighborhood safety.
Under PSN’s principles, this case represents a commitment to making neighborhoods safer for all residents. On May 26, 2021, the Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy that strengthened PSN based on these core principles.
Castro’s sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and serves as a reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in drug trafficking with firearms. The Grimy Times will continue to report on such cases, ensuring the public remains informed about the ongoing efforts to combat crime and ensure justice is served.
