CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Bruce Jovon Williams, 34, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is facing a hefty prison sentence after admitting today in federal court to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The conviction stems from a brazen August 28th incident where Williams allegedly assaulted a woman and then led police on a foot chase, discarding a weapon in the process.
According to court documents, the trouble began when a woman reported to law enforcement that Williams had physically assaulted her, escalating the attack by hitting her with a gun. When officers attempted to make contact with Williams, he bolted, sprinting into a backyard and attempting to hide inside a small garage. He refused to comply with commands to exit, forcing officers to deploy a K9 unit to apprehend him. A firearm was quickly discovered near the garage where Williams had taken cover.
This wasn’t Williams’ first brush with the law. He already has two prior convictions for theft in the second degree, automatically disqualifying him from legally owning a firearm. The case is a key component of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement, and the communities they serve.
The DOJ launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, built on four pillars: building trust and legitimacy within communities, investing in violence prevention programs led by local organizations, prioritizing focused enforcement efforts, and meticulously tracking results. This case exemplifies the program’s goal of taking repeat offenders and dangerous weapons off the streets.
Williams remains in the custody of the United States Marshal while awaiting sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams. A presentence report will be prepared to aid the judge in determining the appropriate punishment. He now faces a potential maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison without the possibility of parole, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release following imprisonment.
