Cedar Rapids Man Faces Lengthy Prison Term for Armed Robbery
Cedar Rapids, IA – In a disturbing display of gun violence, Treshawn Smith, 19, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to more than six years in federal prison for his involvement in an armed robbery of a pizza delivery driver.
According to court documents, Smith was an unlawful user of marijuana in 2015 and possessed a loaded handgun on July 10, 2015. On the same day, officers encountered Smith on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids, where he threw an object on the ground, later discovered to be a loaded .38 caliber handgun.
At a hearing on January 21, 2016, the government presented evidence that on December 16, 2015, Smith used another handgun to rob a pizza delivery driver. When the driver and his companion attempted to follow him, Smith turned and fired one shot at them.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade handed down the sentence, ordering Smith to serve 81 months in federal prison. He will also have to serve a three-year term of supervised release after completing his prison term. A special assessment of $100 was imposed.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney C.J. Williams and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force.
