James Colquhoun, Methamphetamine Distribution, Iowa 2024

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – James Colquhoun, a 40-year-old Cedar Rapids man, will spend the next 28 years of his life behind bars after being sentenced for a large-scale methamphetamine and heroin operation, and illegally possessing firearms. Chief Judge C.J. Williams of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa handed down the 336-month sentence on July 7, 2025.

Colquhoun pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance – a repeat offense after a prior serious drug felony – along with charges of carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The investigation revealed Colquhoun wasn’t just moving small amounts; he was a key player in distributing significant quantities of methamphetamine throughout the Cedar Rapids area between January and February of 2024.

The bust went down February 13, 2024, when officers pulled over Colquhoun’s vehicle. A search uncovered a staggering haul: over 500 grams of methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, more than $25,000 in cash, and a firearm. But the drugs didn’t stop there. A subsequent search of Colquhoun’s hotel room revealed an additional 600 grams of heroin, over 50 grams of methamphetamine, and another firearm. The man was clearly heavily invested in the trade.

This wasn’t Colquhoun’s first rodeo with the law. Back in 2014, he was convicted in the same federal court for similar offenses – distribution of a controlled substance and illegal firearm possession related to drug trafficking. Clearly, a previous federal conviction did little to deter him from returning to the same criminal path. The feds weren’t messing around this time, and the lengthy sentence reflects that.

Colquhoun is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, awaiting transfer to a federal prison facility. He’ll serve the full 336 months, with no chance of parole. Following his release, he’ll face a 10-year term of supervised release, a formality in a case like this. Assistant United States Attorneys Dillan Edwards and Michael Hudson prosecuted the case, with crucial investigative work done by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and Marion Police Department.
