Joseph Archer III, Possession of Firearms and Fentanyl, Missouri 2023

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Joseph Archer III, 43, is headed to federal prison for eight years after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm and leading Springfield police on a reckless chase. U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips handed down the 96-month sentence today, with no chance of parole.

The trouble began June 29, 2023, when Springfield Police Department officers attempted a traffic stop on a Toyota Camry driven by Archer. Instead of complying, Archer floored it, initiating a pursuit that quickly turned dangerous. He didn’t just run – he slammed into a police vehicle, crippling it and leaving an officer with minor injuries. Even after briefly losing control, Archer kept fleeing.

The chase ended with Archer crashing the Camry into an outbuilding. He then abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, but officers quickly apprehended him. A search of the wrecked Camry revealed a stolen Taurus PT handgun, a box of ammunition, fentanyl, methamphetamine, mail addressed to Archer, and his Missouri Department of Corrections ID. The evidence painted a clear picture of a man with a history of disregard for the law.

Archer’s criminal history is extensive. He’s a convicted felon, previously facing charges for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. Federal law strictly prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms or ammunition, a rule Archer flagrantly ignored. The discovery of fentanyl alongside the gun raises serious concerns about the potential for further criminal activity.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie L. Wan prosecuted the case, with crucial investigative work conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Springfield Police Department. This wasn’t just a gun charge; it was a culmination of reckless behavior and a disregard for public safety.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement at all levels with the communities they serve. The Department’s renewed focus on PSN emphasizes building trust, supporting community organizations, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. Archer’s sentencing serves as a stark warning: those who put our communities at risk will face the full weight of the law.
