Waterloo, Iowa – A 21-year-old from Waterloo, Iowa, has been sentenced to a decade in federal prison for unlawfully possessing multiple firearms.
Chandrique Day, 21, from Waterloo, was sentenced to 120 months’ imprisonment on May 14, 2021 after a guilty plea to possessing a firearm as a drug user.
Evidence presented at the sentencing hearing revealed that Day was in possession of multiple handguns, some equipped with extended magazines, as well as an AR-15 rifle with a high-capacity magazine.
Day’s sentence also includes a three-year term of supervised release after his prison term. However, there is no parole in the federal system.
The case against Day was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a violent crime reduction effort led by the federal government. PSN works to identify and address violent crime problems in local communities through a collaborative approach involving law enforcement and community stakeholders.
Day is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody, awaiting transportation to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lisa C. Williams and investigated by a Federal Task Force composed of the Waterloo Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, assisted by the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and Cedar Falls Police Department.
