Parmelee Woman Charged with Child Abuse in South Dakota
Charlee Spotted Tail, a 21-year-old woman from Parmelee, South Dakota, has been charged with child abuse in a federal indictment.
The indictment, handed down on October 12, 2016, alleges that Spotted Tail abused a child under the age of seven on March 11, 2016. The charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 15 years in custody and/or a $30,000 fine, as well as 3 years of supervised release and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Spotted Tail appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on February 22, 2017, and pled not guilty to the indictment. She was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, which has not yet been scheduled.
The investigation into the child abuse allegations is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson is prosecuting the case.
At this time, Spotted Tail is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The charge is merely an accusation, and she will have the opportunity to defend herself against the allegations.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting children from abuse and ensuring that those who commit such crimes are held accountable. The investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases require a collaborative effort from law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and the community at large.
The outcome of this case will be closely watched by the community, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
