A grim reminder that sex offenders have a duty to register has come in the form of a federal indictment against Charles Nathaniel Graves, a 35-year-old man from Sapulpa, Oklahoma.
According to Acting United States Attorney Dennis R. Holmes, Graves was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 7, 2021, for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. This charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, life of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Graves, who had previously been convicted of a sex crime, was required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. However, he allegedly failed to do so on September 1, 2019, and July 7, 2021.
The investigation into this case was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper prosecuting the case. Graves was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, with a trial date yet to be set.
Graves’ failure to register as a sex offender has sparked concerns about public safety and the importance of adhering to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. This law aims to protect communities by requiring sex offenders to register their whereabouts with law enforcement.
The case against Graves serves as a warning to those who may be tempted to evade their obligations under this act. It also highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in ensuring that sex offenders are held accountable for their actions.
Graves is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the charges against him are a stark reminder that failure to register as a sex offender can have serious consequences.
