CHARLESTON, W.VA. – A gritty plea hearing marked the downfall of Shanton E. Penn, 27, who admitted to the dark world of methamphetamine distribution.
The United States Attorney Mike Stuart announced that Penn had entered a guilty plea for distributing over 20 grams of the deadly drug. The streets of Charleston are no stranger to the fight against such poison peddlers, and Stuart vowed, “We’re prosecuting meth dealer after meth dealer. We are 100 percent committed to ridding our communities of poison peddlers.”
Penn’s fall from grace was a direct result of a joint investigation by the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Team (MDENT) and the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department.
On August 14, 2018, and August 20, 2018, an MDENT confidential informant purchased methamphetamine from Penn. The defendant reportedly sold the drug twice to this informer for $300 and $375.
Penn now faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison when he is sentenced on August 8, 2019. Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr., presided over the plea hearing, with Assistant United States Attorney Chris Arthur handling the prosecution.
