Chicago, IL – A caravan of vehicles descended upon a U.S. Customs and Border Protection operation in Chicago’s Southwest Side on October 3, 2025, with one driver taking a violent turn. Anthony Gonzalez Alvarez, 27, rammed his Ford pickup truck into the rear of a CBP vehicle, intentionally impeding the work of the federal agents.
Gonzalez Alvarez, a resident of Lyons, Illinois, then compounded his crime by filing a false police report claiming his truck had been stolen, according to his plea agreement. The U.S. Department of Justice says this was a deliberate attempt to conceal his involvement in the collision.
His actions were part of Operation Midway Blitz, a joint effort between federal agencies to combat immigration-related crimes. Gonzalez Alvarez’s plea deal includes a maximum sentence of three years in federal prison.
The guilty plea was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI.
U.S. District Judge LaShonda A. Hunt set sentencing for July 22, 2026. Gonzalez Alvarez pleaded guilty to one count of misprision of felony.
