Joshua Hecht, Child Pornography, Nebraska 2023

⏱ 2 min read

Joshua Hecht, a 26-year-old from Waverly, Nebraska, has been sentenced to 135 months in prison for transporting and possessing child pornography. Hecht’s crimes began in October 2023 when he contacted a 16-year-old boy, referred to as Victim 1, on Snapchat. Hecht used the platform to create explicit content, including taking screenshots of the minor masturbating. The interactions took place over several months, with Hecht planning to meet the boy in person in January 2024.

Hecht’s plans were thwarted when Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents became aware of his intended travel and intercepted him at the airport. A border search of Hecht’s phone revealed the explicit images, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges. Further investigation found multiple videos of Hecht and the minor engaging in explicit acts on Facetime video calls.

The case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. Hecht’s sentence, handed down by United States District Court Judge Brian C. Buescher, includes 135 months for transportation of child pornography and 120 months for possession, to be served concurrently. Hecht will also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after his prison term.

The sentence reflects the severity of Hecht’s crimes and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to protect minors from exploitation. The use of social media platforms to facilitate such crimes highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between agencies to identify and prosecute offenders.
