Child Predator Sentenced to 97 Months

PANAMA CITY, FLORIDA – A former Air Force member from Panama City has been sentenced to 97 months in prison for child exploitation offenses.

Daniel Freiwald, 29, was handed down the sentence by the Honorable Judge Smoak in a federal court. Freiwald was found guilty of three counts of child exploitation, including possession and receipt of images and videos of child pornography.

The majority of the child pornography images and videos depicted prepubescent children, including infants and toddlers. The crimes took place between December 7, 2012, and January 23, 2013, while Freiwald was an active-duty member stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base.

Freiwald will also serve a five-year term of supervised release after completing his prison sentence. The sentence was the result of a joint investigation by the North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which included agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the Pensacola Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorney Kathryn Risinger prosecuted the case, which was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project was launched by the federal government in May 2006 and aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat of child exploitation and the importance of collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to combat this crime.
