A 39-year-old Mexican national, Abelardo Sanchez, has been extradited to the US to face charges for producing child sex abuse material. Sanchez, who had been living in Dublin, Ireland, was arrested in Austria in December 2025 and extradited to Texas on June 5. He appeared in McAllen federal court on June 8. The investigation, which involved Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations, led to the identification of a minor victim who had resided in Texas at the time Sanchez produced the images.
Sanchez allegedly had an online account that contained child sex abuse material, some of which appeared to be self-produced and dated back to 2014. The charges against him were brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
If convicted, Sanchez faces a minimum of 25 and up to 50 years in federal prison, as well as a possible $250,000 maximum fine. Assistant U.S. Attorney M. Alexis Garcia is prosecuting the case, which was investigated with the assistance of international law enforcement partners.
The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs played a significant role in securing the arrest and extradition of Sanchez. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat child sex abuse and exploitation, both domestically and internationally.
