A 51-year-old Omaha man has been sentenced to 186 months in prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking ring.
Christopher Smith was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. He was prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior felony convictions for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in 2000 and felon in possession of a firearm in 2006.
On December 18, 2019, Smith was a passenger in a vehicle in Omaha when police found him in possession of a Taurus handgun, a .45 caliber handgun, $1,200, and methamphetamine. He admitted to possessing both firearms and to selling drugs.
On February 28, 2020, officers arrested Smith at his Omaha residence, where they found crack cocaine and $1,790. Later that day, a search warrant was executed on a hotel room, resulting in the discovery of other conspirators, 399 grams of methamphetamine, a drug scale, and a firearm. A vehicle search on March 2, 2020, uncovered an additional 304 grams of methamphetamine concealed inside.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Omaha Police Department.
Smith will serve his 186-month sentence without parole, followed by a 5-year term of supervised release. The total amount of methamphetamine seized during the investigation was 703 grams.
This is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trafficking ring in Omaha, and we appreciate the hard work and dedication of the investigators who brought this case to justice.
