Derrick Lewis, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Mississippi 2024

Derrick Lewis, a 42-year-old Clinton man known as ‘Rat Boy,’ was sentenced to 110 months in federal prison yesterday for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in the Jackson metro area. The sentence, handed down in U.S. District Court, marks the end of a years-long investigation into a local drug operation that flooded neighborhoods with near-pure crystal meth.

Lewis, who pleaded guilty on July 22, 2021, admitted to selling methamphetamine on four separate occasions, with the total weight surpassing 400 grams. Forensic testing revealed the substance was 99% pure—a level of potency law enforcement says indicates high-level distribution, not casual use. The charges stemmed from an indictment originally filed on November 4, 2020.

According to court records, the transactions occurred across the Jackson area, where Lewis used coded language and rapid exchanges to avoid detection. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation dismantled the operation through surveillance, confidential informants, and physical evidence recovered during controlled buys.

U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca emphasized the danger posed by unchecked meth distribution. ‘This wasn’t just a personal habit—it was a calculated effort to profit off addiction,’ LaMarca said. ‘We’re removing a supplier who dealt poison at near-laboratory grade.’

Lewis will serve 110 months behind bars followed by four years of supervised release. Authorities warn that relapse into drug activity during supervision could trigger additional federal penalties. The case was prosecuted by Deputy Criminal Chief Dave Fulcher, who called the sentence ‘a hard-earned win for public safety.’

The FBI led the investigation, underscoring ongoing federal focus on synthetic drug networks in central Mississippi. As meth purity climbs and overdoses rise, law enforcement officials say cases like Lewis’s are prime targets for aggressive prosecution under federal drug statutes.
