McALLEN, Texas – In a bitter blow to the notorious ‘Cobra’ human smuggling ring, six members have been sentenced to federal prison for conspiring to smuggle undocumented individuals.
The ruthless smuggling organization, led by 42-year-old Saul Torres-Martinez aka ‘Cobra,’ was responsible for more than 100 undocumented individuals from the Mexican border to Houston between 2018 and 2019. But their reign of terror ended abruptly when law enforcement identified and apprehended six members of the group.
Torres-Martinez, the mastermind behind the operation, was sentenced to 110 months in federal prison by Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane. The judge found Torres-Martinez to be the leader or organizer of the smuggling operation and expressed concern about the harm caused to the community.
Other members of the group, Ernesto Mata Pioquinto, 32, Marcelino Navarro Sanchez, 31, Robert Hernandez, 26, Noemi Silva, 39, and Luis Esteban Martinez, 41, received significantly shorter sentences ranging from 39 to 87 months in federal prison. Hernandez, Silva, and Martinez will serve three years of supervised release following their terms of imprisonment.
Not U.S. citizens, Torres-Martinez, Pioquinto, and Sanchez are expected to face removal proceedings following the completion of their respective sentences. In a chilling statement, U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani warned, “Human smuggling organizations simply don’t care. They do not see the migrants they transport as human beings but rather as currency. As a result, when you put yourselves in these criminals’ hands you risk exposing yourself to extreme danger or even death.”
The investigation, conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and Border Patrol, revealed that members of the human smuggling organization were responsible for a smuggling fatality and an alleged sexual assault of another smuggled individual.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Phelps prosecuted the case, bringing the perpetrators to justice and sending a strong message to human smuggling organizations operating in the Rio Grande Valley.
As the sentences are handed down, the community can finally breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that those responsible for the harm and suffering inflicted by the ‘Cobra’ human smuggling ring will face the consequences of their actions.
