Brandon Azael Lopez, a 30-year-old Texas man, was caught smuggling six kilograms of cocaine on Interstate 20/59 in Greene County, Alabama, on December 12, 2023. Lopez was traveling with his brother, allegedly to work for an oil company in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, his nervous behavior during a traffic stop raised suspicions, leading to a search of the vehicle and the discovery of the cocaine.
The search was conducted by an agent with the 17th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force, who had pulled Lopez over for changing lanes without using a signal. Lopez had consented to the search, which revealed a new battery jump box and jumper cables, as well as two batteries with extensive tool marks, hinting at a hidden compartment.
Lopez pleaded guilty to possession with the intent to distribute cocaine in October 2025. He was sentenced to 46 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Annmarie C. Axon. The sentencing is a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, including the DEA, to crack down on drug trafficking in the region.
The case highlights the creative methods used by drug traffickers to hide their illicit cargo. However, as DEA Special Agent in Charge John P. Scott warned, ‘no matter how well you think you’ve hidden your drugs, we will find them, and you will go to federal prison.’ Lopez’s sentence serves as a deterrent to those who would use Alabama’s highways to transport narcotics.
