Cocaine Thrower Gets 12 Months
A Batesland man will spend the next 12 months and 1 day behind bars after throwing cocaine in the face of a tribal police officer during a traffic stop.
William Morrisette, 23, was sentenced on December 11, 2012, by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. In addition to his prison time, Morrisette was also ordered to serve 2 years of supervised release and pay $100 to the Victim Assistance Fund.
The incident occurred in January 2012, near Pine Ridge. Morrisette was pulled over by a tribal police officer, and in a bizarre and reckless move, he threw cocaine in the officer’s face. This brazen act led to Morrisette’s subsequent arrest and prosecution.
Morrisette pleaded guilty to Assault on a Federal Officer on June 19, 2012. The case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Office of Justice Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins prosecuted the case.
The harsh sentence handed down to Morrisette serves as a reminder of the severity of assaulting a federal officer. Such acts will not be taken lightly, and those who commit them can expect severe consequences.
