PLANO, Texas – A chilling tale of deception and support for terrorism reached its conclusion as Mohommad Ali, 57, and his wife, Sumaiya Ali, 49, were sentenced to federal prison after lying to FBI agents about their sons’ involvement with the Islamic State in Syria. U.S. Attorney Alan R. Jackson announced the sentences, which saw Mohommad receive 12 months while Sumaiya was handed a 30-month term.
The Alis pleaded guilty on December 13, 2017, to making false statements to the FBI regarding their sons’ activities in Syria. In 2014 and 2015, the couple had contact with their sons, who were actively fighting for ISIS in the Middle Eastern country. When questioned by FBI agents in May 2015, the Alis denied any knowledge of their sons’ location or affiliations with the terror group.
“There is an object lesson here,” Jackson emphasized. “We will remain vigilant against those who support terrorism and those who attempt to shield supporters from scrutiny.”
According to court documents, the FBI’s investigation revealed that the Alis were not only aware of their sons’ involvement with ISIS but also provided them with financial support. The couple’s lies to federal agents were deemed a deliberate attempt to obstruct justice in the ongoing fight against international terrorism.
The case was a collaborative effort between the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas, as well as the Counterterrorism Section of the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. The sentences handed down today send a clear message that the United States will not tolerate those who seek to undermine national security through deceptive actions.
The sentencing of Mohommad and Sumaiya Ali serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to support terror organizations, even from within their own homes. The couple’s convictions and sentences underscore the government’s resolve to protect American citizens from such threats.
