A 42-year-old man from Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, has been ordered held without bond for allegedly distributing and possessing child pornography.

The Charges

Eli Traufield, 42, was indicted on February 23, 2016, and was arraigned in court after being advised of his rights and the charges against him. Traufield, however, has a history of failing to appear in court for misdemeanor offenses.

The Investigation

A Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent, working in an undercover capacity out of the Minneapolis Field Office, began electronic communications with Traufield, who had child pornography to trade. The agent was able to download multiple videos and photos of child pornography images, which were provided by Traufield.

Evidence and Charges

Following additional investigation, Denver FBI agents searched Traufield’s cell phone and found that he had emailed himself child pornography to later download to a file-sharing network. They also discovered multiple chats about his sexual interest in young girls.

Penalties

Traufield faces two counts of distribution of child pornography, with a penalty of not less than 5 years, and not more than 20 years in federal prison, as well as up to a $250,000 fine per count. He also faces one count of possession of child pornography, carrying a penalty of not more than 10 years in federal prison, and up to a $250,000 fine.

Prosecution

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Valeria Spencer.

Presumption of Innocence

The charges contained in the indictment are allegations, and Traufield is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
