Columbus Man Lied to Get Citizenship
A United States District Court jury has convicted Maqsood Haroon, 41, of Columbus, Ohio, of unlawful procurement of citizenship or naturalization.
Haroon, who traveled to the United States from Pakistan on a visitor’s visa, married a U.S. citizen and completed the naturalization process to become a U.S. citizen. However, he made false statements to immigration officials, claiming he had no other wife or children, when in fact, he was previously married in Pakistan and had children.
HSI Special Agent in Charge Marlon V. Miller stated, “Committing fraud to obtain citizenship or any U.S. immigration benefit represents an egregious breach of the nation’s legal system and is a blatant affront to those who play by the rules.”
HSI will continue to aggressively move against those engaged in such criminal acts, Miller added. Procurement of citizenship or naturalization unlawfully is a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
U.S. Attorney Carter M. Stewart commended the investigation by HSI and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, as well as Assistant United States Attorneys David DeVillers and Jessica Kim, who prosecuted the case.
The conviction comes after a trial that began on Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Gregory L. Frost.
Haroon’s actions not only undermine the integrity of the immigration system but also create unfair advantages for those who seek to exploit it. The prosecution of such cases is crucial in maintaining the rule of law and upholding the trust placed in our institutions.
