WICHITA, KAN – A federal prescription drug trafficking prosecution involving a user who died from an overdose has led to the downfall of a ruthless trafficking organization in Franklin County, Kansas. Three investigators from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and Internal Revenue Service have been awarded the Guardian of Justice Awards for their outstanding work in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Jeremi Thompson, Traci Allen, and Jeff Thomas, the recipients of the prestigious award, worked tirelessly to uncover the trafficking ring that was distributing oxycodone, morphine, and other prescription drugs throughout Franklin County. Their dedication and expertise led to the conviction and sentencing of the ring leader, Connie Edwards, to 25 years in federal prison.
Thompson, a seasoned investigator with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, worked long hours, holidays, and weekends on the investigation, following leads, interviewing witnesses, and providing prosecutors with sharp, accurate reports. Allen, who worked as an undercover officer and co-case agent with Thompson, played a crucial role in building the case against the trafficking organization. Thomas, a specialist with the IRS, followed the money trail to bring down the traffickers’ money laundering and tax evasion scheme.
The investigation also identified Medicare and Medicaid fraud at a local pharmacy, highlighting the scope of the trafficking organization’s operations. The Guardian of Justice Awards recognize law enforcement professionals who stand out for their outstanding work on cases successfully prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Miguel Arellano-Hernandez, a special agent in charge of the Kansas Department of Revenue’s Office of Special Investigations, was also awarded the Guardian of Justice Award for his expertise in using facial recognition tools and motor vehicle and financial records to build federal immigration cases. His work has been instrumental in the successful prosecution of several cases, including the prosecution of Benita Cardona Gonzalez, a case in which the defendant stole a Texas school teacher’s identity to buy a house and pay hospital bills for the birth of her own children.
The Guardian of Justice Awards have been presented annually since 2002 to state and local law enforcement officers, as well as federal agents, who were nominated by federal prosecutors for their outstanding work. The awards are a testament to the dedication and talent of law enforcement professionals who safeguard our neighborhoods and protect the people of Kansas from crime and violence.
