Convenience Store Robbery Lands Eagle Butte Man 52 Months Behind Bars
July 20, 2021, marked a somber day for Colton White Feather, 26, of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, as he was sentenced to 52 months in federal prison for his role in the robbery of a local convenience store.
On December 24, 2020, White Feather, wearing a black baseball cap, a grey hoodie sweatshirt, a dark blue bandana across his face, jeans, and white tennis shoes, entered the convenience store, brandishing a knife. He ordered one of the store clerks to open the cash register, which the clerk complied with before backing away. White Feather then grabbed money from the register and also demanded cigarettes.
According to Acting United States Attorney Dennis Holmes, White Feather’s actions on that fateful night were a serious crime that left a lasting impact on the community. ‘This conviction serves as a reminder that we will not tolerate violent crime in our communities,’ Holmes stated.
The investigation into the robbery was led by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller successfully prosecuted the case, securing a 52-month prison sentence for White Feather, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
White Feather, who was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, also faces an open restitution order of $0 for 60 days. The 60-day period allows for a determination of the total restitution owed to the victims.
Colton White Feather’s guilty plea on April 26, 2021, preceded his sentencing, which was handed down by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, on July 19, 2021. White Feather was initially indicted on January 12, 2021.
