Convicted Sex Offender Jailed for 18 Months
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a stark reminder of the consequences of failing to comply with sex offender registration laws, a federal court has sentenced a convicted sex offender to 18 months in prison for his crimes.
Denny Mendoza, 38, formerly of Providence, was handed down the prison term by U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell, Jr. after pleading guilty to violating the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) in October 2012.
The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) provides a comprehensive set of federal standards for sex offender registration and notification in the United States through a nationwide network of sex offender registration and notification programs. SORNA also requires registered sex offenders to register and keep their registration current in each jurisdiction in which they reside, work, or go to school, and to make periodic in-person appearances to verify and update their registration information.
According to information presented to the court, Mendoza had registered as a sex offender in September 2010 while living in Providence, but failed to notify authorities when he moved to locations in Fall River and Chelsea, Mass., beginning in May 2011.
His failure to comply with the law ultimately led to his arrest on November 8, 2011, in Chelsea, Mass., by members of the U.S. Marshals led Sex Offender Task Force (SOLEMN) and Chelsea detectives.
Mendoza’s case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard W. Rose, who successfully argued for the 18-month prison term and 10 years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Rhode Island, in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals led Sex Offender Task Force, is committed to ensuring that convicted sex offenders comply with sex offender registration laws and face the consequences of their actions.
