A brazen scammer has been caught red-handed in Pittsburgh. Andre Pitts, 21, deposited an altered $62,211 US Treasury check in June 2023, claiming it was his tax refund for the previous year.
The check had been issued months earlier to another individual, but Pitts managed to alter the payee info and memo line to make it look like it was his.
He quickly withdrew $500 in cash and had a $25,000 cashier’s check issued to himself.
Pitts pleaded guilty to uttering a counterfeit obligation and theft of government property. He’s facing up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Senior US District Judge David S. Cercone set sentencing for August 13, 2026.
