Counterfeit Check Ring Busted in Springfield

A 52-year-old Springfield man has been sentenced to 17 months in prison for his role in a counterfeit check scam.

John Jordan, 52, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Patti B. Saris to 17 months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release and $1,435 in restitution.

Jordan pleaded guilty in September 2012 to four counts of bank fraud and four counts of counterfeit security fraud.

According to prosecutors, Jordan created high-quality counterfeit checks on his computer and sold them to co-conspirators at a discounted price. These co-conspirators would then attempt to cash the checks at local businesses and financial institutions.

The counterfeit checks were made more convincing by Jordan’s use of legitimate customer and corporate account information.

U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz praised the work of law enforcement in bringing the case to a close, saying, ‘We appreciate the efforts of the U.S. Secret Service and the Massachusetts State Police in disrupting this counterfeit check operation.’

Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Hart Smyth prosecuted the case, which was handled by Ortiz’s Springfield Branch Office.
