Counterfeit DVD Kingpin Brought to Justice
Tampa, Florida – A federal jury has found Jason Sanon, 30, of Ft. Myers, guilty of conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit trademarks on DVDs and trafficking in DVDs bearing counterfeit trademarks.
The verdict was handed down on [no date specified] and Sanon’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 1, 2017. Sanon’s operation, WipeoutDVDs.com, sold counterfeit DVDs to unsuspecting customers across the United States from 2010 to 2013.
Sanon bought the DVDs from TM Wholesale, a Chinese manufacturer of counterfeit DVDs, and sold them for a profit to his customers. The counterfeit DVDs bore the logos and trademarks of movie studios, including those that produced the authentic versions of the disks.
The investigation that led to Sanon’s conviction was an offshoot of a related investigation conducted by the Department of Homeland Security, which resulted in the successful prosecution of 15 other individuals who had trafficked in counterfeit DVDs from the same Chinese source.
The investigation led to criminal forfeitures of over $2,400,000 and the seizure of vehicles and a business in Polk County.
The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, with the assistance of the Motion Picture Association of America.
Sanon’s case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jay L. Hoffer, who is continuing the work previously done by former Assistant United States Attorney Mark Bini.
Sanon is set to face sentencing on June 1, 2017, following his conviction of trafficking counterfeit trademarks on DVDs and selling them to unsuspecting customers across the US.
