Davenport Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Crack Cocaine Conspiracy
A Davenport man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a crack cocaine conspiracy that spanned several years. Brandon Jermaine Sykes, 33, was sentenced by Senior United States District Court Judge James E. Gritzner on March 3, 2016.
Sykes pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute at least 280 grams of cocaine base, also known as crack cocaine, in December 2015. According to the plea agreement, Sykes obtained powder cocaine from individuals in Chicago and then converted it to crack cocaine, which he sold to 15 different customers in the Davenport area.
Law enforcement officials say that Sykes was a key player in the conspiracy, and that he was involved in the distribution of crack cocaine from April 2013 to April 2015. On four separate occasions, officers used a confidential source to purchase crack cocaine from Sykes at his Davenport residence.
The investigation into Sykes’ activities was a joint effort between the Davenport Police Department’s Tactical Operations Bureau, the Davenport Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
Sykes’ sentence also includes five years of supervised release and a $100 fine to be paid towards the Crime Victims’ Fund. The sentence is a result of Sykes’ guilty plea and his cooperation with law enforcement officials.
Sykes’ case is a reminder of the ongoing threat of drug trafficking in the Quad Cities area. The Davenport Police Department and other law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to combat this issue and keep our community safe.
As a result of the investigation, Sykes will be serving a significant amount of time in prison for his role in the crack cocaine conspiracy. The sentence is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the law enforcement officials who worked on this case, and serves as a warning to others who would engage in similar activities.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa will continue to prosecute cases involving drug trafficking and other violent crimes in the area.
