OCALA, FL – Craig Antwon O’Neal, 53, of Ocala, Florida, is staring down the barrel of a potential life sentence after being indicted on a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment, handed down on March 3, 2021, stems from an incident on July 20, 2020, where O’Neal was found to be illegally carrying a gun.
This isn’t O’Neal’s first rodeo with the law – far from it. Records show a staggering 20 prior state felony convictions, painting a clear picture of a career criminal. His rap sheet includes strong-arm robbery, violently resisting arrest, peddling cocaine, and breaking into vehicles. The sheer volume of his past offenses now qualifies him for enhanced sentencing under the Armed Career Criminal statute, meaning the judge has significant leeway to maximize his punishment.
Federal law strictly prohibits convicted felons from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition. O’Neal’s extensive criminal history makes this charge particularly serious. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida is seeking a mandatory minimum of 15 years, with the potential reaching up to life in federal prison. This isn’t about a single mistake; it’s about a repeat offender flouting the law and endangering the public.
The case was built by agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), working in conjunction with the Unified Drug Enforcement Strike Team (UDEST). U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg framed the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broader initiative designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence across the country. PSN emphasizes collaboration between law enforcement at all levels and community organizations, focusing on building trust and addressing the root causes of crime. However, for O’Neal, the focus is now squarely on accountability and a potentially lengthy prison term.
The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, prioritizing focused enforcement and measurable results. For O’Neal, the results are coming in the form of a federal indictment and the looming threat of spending the rest of his life behind bars. A sentencing date has not yet been announced, but the message is clear: illegally possessing a firearm with a history like O’Neal’s will have severe consequences.
